Stark Sunlight

Seeing in black and white

My black and white photography was medicore at best before I learned to see in black and white. Seeing in black and white is observing highlights, shadows, and contrast in my surroundings and the way they interact with each other. Through experimentation, my favorite days to photograph black and white images are on very sunny days with no clouds in the sky. Being in a metro area can make it more interesting because of structures overlapping and shadows being cast.

Raw versus Edited

In the image below, the left is what it looks like straight out of the camera with no edits. The right is what it looks like after minor editing which includes converting to black and white and crushing the blacks to taste. Honing the skill to see in highlight and shadow affords me the ability to create interesting images that I get really excited about.

Stark sunlight creates beautiful black and white

The bright-as-sin lighting conditions make these kind of high contrast black and whites that I have grown to love possible.
