The Art of the Brick is a Must-see Exhibit

The newly opened exhibit by artist Nathan Sawaya, The Art of the Brick, is a critically-acclaimed collection of inspiring artworks that is made exclusively from one of the most recognizable toys in the world: the LEGO® brick.

The Buffalo Museum of Science

The Buffalo Museum of Science is a magical place that facilitates wonder and play for both children and adults. I wasn’t familiar with Nathan Sawaya and his brick art before seeing the exhibit, which made the experience that much sweeter for me. I instantly fell in love with his use of bright, happy colors. Nathan’s subject matter ranges from re-imagined versions of the world’s most famous art masterpieces (like Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa) to shapes of the human form, and more.

An incredible complement (and my favorite part!) to this exhibit is Nathan’s collaboration with photographer Dean West. Dean is best known for his intricate and highly staged photographs that take everyday occurrences beyond the realm of natural reality. Dean has incorporated Nathan’s lego sculptures into his photographs. You just have to see it! I should mention for the parents who want to bring their children; while you cannot actually touch or move these sculptures, there are many Lego building block stations for kids to play with.

The Buffalo Museum of Science is one of my clients and this has been my favorite museum photography assignment yet. I was able to enjoy and capture the exhibit without a crowd on one of its first days.

Plan Your Visit

You’ve got until May 5, 2019 to see these Lego sculptures in person. There are designated entry times for this exhibit, so it is recommended that you purchase tickets in advance to make sure you lock in your preferred time slot.

His most famous sculpture titled, “Yellow”.
Dean West‘s incredible photographs. I’m still thinking about them.
